Movie Review: Kai Po Che! : Brilliant Tale Of Friendship,Cricket and Politics

Based on Chetan Bhagat‘s bestselling novel : 3 mistakes of my life – the trailers of this movie created the right kind of buzz for a movie with newcomers in the lead.

Kai Po Che! is a story of 3 childhood friends,their dreams and the dramatic events which shape and affect their lives.They dream of setting up a local sports academy to train local talent.Omi(Amit Sadh) takes care of the getting them a shop and money taking help from his politician uncle, Govind(Rajkumar Yadav) takes care of the shop,accounts and budget and Ishaan(Sushant Singh Rajput) a talented cricket player himself commits to coach the local talent.

As simple as it seems,it does not work out as planned -as they start turning their dreams into reality – their business and friendship is tested along the way. Ishaan starts training Ali – a local kid with amazing batting talent – and he has just one goal – to train Ali into an international batsman and Ishaan takes this training task as a possessed soul.In the meanwhile Govind becomes a maths tutor for Ishaan’s sister(Amrita Puri) eventually falling in love.As Ishaan gets more involved in training Ali – cracks in their group’s friendship begin to show up.

Now this story also takes serious turns – an earthquake in Gujarat(2001) destroys the shop and leaves Govind shattered and at the same time Ishaan supports Ali and family against all odds, which in-turn creates a rift between him and Omi who support his community and his Uncle’s party.

Unable to pay the damages and the heavy loan Omi gets more involved in his Uncle’s party and gets into politics completely – which is followed by another disastrous events(Godhra 2002) – Omi parents are executed and communal riots take over and the friendship is tested again.

Story demanded crisp direction and solid performances and thankfully the movie delivers on every front.Director Abhishek Kapoor handles the movie with complete control and never gives us a dull moment.Screenplay and adaptation was worked by both Abhiskek Kapoor and Chetan Bhagat and it plays on screen really well.

Performances in movie are all good,Rajkumar Yadav’s brilliant portrayal of simple,dedicated,calculated guy or Sushant’s obsessed coaching act and being careless himself ( he might be getting some big offers already) or Amit Sadh’s revenge hungry transformation – everyone plays their part with dedication and it shows on screen.

Another amazing point to note is the length of the movie – clocking just 2 hours with 3 songs which do not interrupt the story at all makes it even more enjoyable.Packed with amazing performances,superb direction,perfect length and soothing music(Amit Trivedi), Kai Po Che is a winner and its demands your attention and 2 hours.

This one is not be missed – Go for it – this is Bollywood at its best – a perfect cocktail of friendship,politics and cricket.

Movie Rating : 4/5 – a must watch.
